President's Message |

As we look ahead to the Summer Sectional and Pittsburgh Regional, I encourage every member of Unit 142 to support what promises to be one of the most exciting bridge events our area has hosted. Hosting a tournament requires tremendous effort and I would like to extend special thanks to Jim Gump, and David and Maureen Loeb, whose leadership and countless hours of planning have helped create an outstanding program for players of all levels.
The Pittsburgh Regional provides a wide range of bridge events for advanced, intermediate and beginning players, with ample opportunity to win masterpoints. We are especially fortunate to welcome Robert Todd, chairman of the ACBL Educational Foundation, who will lead a series of workshops including:
The Regional features nightly entertainment, providing plenty of opportunities to socialize after a day at the tables. In addition, attendees can enjoy excellent accommodations with a great bridge rate.
The success of our tournaments depends on the support of our membership. Whether you volunteer, participate in the events, or help spread the word, your involvement will help make our tournaments a memorable experience for both local players and visitors from across the country

Education |

Some exciting developments on the Bridge Teaching scene of late. Classes continuing in Monroeville, South Hills, Sewickley and Treesdale. And starting in September, Fox Chapel Adult Education has invited Todd Hertzberg in for two evenings a week. One evening will be classroom with lesson boards and the other will be the relocation of Glenshaw Supervised Play. Todd does a great job explaining the game at a digestible velocity.

Hey … want to have some fun introducing the game YOU Love to more players? Whether in Fox Chapel or anywhere around the Burgh, get ahold of me. You needn’t lead the proceedings, just be an at-table assistant to help the newbies figure out what is going on. It’s fun. |

AND Robert Todd is gracing our presence at the Pittsburgh Regional in September, running a soup-to-nuts 4 day ‘Learn And Play with Robert Todd’ which is graduated: beginning bridge on Tuesday and builds throughout the week. I have seen him talk Bridge more than once and he is worth the listen. All students and newer players should attempt to attend those sessions, Tuesday through Friday September 15 th thru 18 th . And on Saturday September 19 th , Robert presents a two-session “Fun Introduction to Bridge” for those completely new to the game. This event will be at the Meadowlands Doubletree. Close enough to the casino (a few minutes walk).
You should encourage your friends who’ve expressed interest, or have expressed astonishment at how addicted you are, to attend these!

Mentoring Update |

Thank you for your support. I have received positive feedback from both Mentors and Mentees. Mentors feel good about giving back to the bridge community and take pride in seeing their mentees improve. Mentees have told me they feel less stressed at the table. They welcome a friendly face across from them and have improved under their mentor's guidance. Here's some particulars.

I Play Bridge, Sometimes Bridge Plays Me |
|
I play bridge three times a week. I buy bridge books and read them. I take lessons and continually work to improve my game. So what keeps me coming back? Some days I play well and I leave the table feeling happy and satisfied. Other days are very different. Last week, I played terribly and finished in last place. I was humbled, disappointed and frustrated. At home, I reviewed the score sheets. Oh my….there were bidding mistakes, declarer play errors and missed opportunities. But later that evening, I realized something. I love bridge. I love the strategy, the challenges and the endless opportunity to learn and play. I relish the competition that bridge provides. There is something special about watching an accomplished player make a brilliant bid or execute a masterful play of a card. A sincere compliment from a fellow player for a well-played hand brings me an inner smile. Those moments remind me that every lesson, every mistake, and every game is part of becoming a better player. Every game teaches me something new, whether I win or lose. Bridge may outplay me on some days, but it never defeats my desire to come back and try again. And that’s why I’ll be sitting at the bridge table again next week. Support District 5 Tournaments |
Get your team together for the Summer Sectional and the Regional
The Summer Sectional features a Bracketed Team game on Sunday, July 26th. The Pittsburgh Regional offers bracketed team games on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Bracketed Team games are popular because they are fair. Teams are grouped into brackets where each team has similar levels of experience and all teams play each other in a round-robin format. Contact the Partnership Desk if you need help filling out your team.
