President's Message - Ron Franck

Kudos to all the bridge teachers and volunteers working throughout our Unit! We now have over fifty beginner students, and the number continues to grow. Volunteering at these classes has been a fantastic experience—both fun and incredibly rewarding. The enthusiasm from students and teachers alike is inspiring, and I encourage more Unit 142 players to get involved as teachers or volunteers.

The lessons and supervised play that Bill Holt discusses in the Education Report below help students become comfortable playing bridge. As students gain confidence in game situations, we encourage them to join the ACBL to take advantage of its many benefits, and to participate in Unit 142 and District 5 games. Clubs and directors play a pivotal role in growing the bridge community by fostering a welcoming environment. It’s essential that we support new players—avoiding unsolicited lessons or negative interactions that could discourage them. Teachers strive to pair students with experienced players to ensure their first club games are enjoyable. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Education Report - Bill Holt

Lessons are progressing well in several locations.

  • In Mt. Lebanon, Phyllis Geinzer has been the driving force for both lessons at Mt. Lebanon Library, and Supervised play at the Galleria. Barbara Logan, John Doyal, Ken Stiger and Maddy Frizzi have been working hard bringing Bridge to this group.
  • In Glenshaw, Todd Hertzberg has been the lead instructor for 5+ tables of Bridge students, assisted by Ron Franck. Supervised play at Glenshaw is now EVERY Thursday night at 6:30, with a mini lesson at 6:15. It’s FREE, and open to Students, Beginners, Novices – anyone who would like to improve their Bridge game in a friendly, no-pressure setting. Todd, Ron, Linda Fried, Ernie Retetagos and Ildiko Baxter have been helping.
  • In Sewickley, I have been the lead in teaching Beginning Bridge to 5+ tables of beginners, ably assisted by Terri Tunick, Marilyn Sittig, and Pat Cavalier.
  • And in Treesdale, Lorraine Hanna continues her lessons.

We have opportunities to bring Bridge to more people and help the game we love survive. Again, I ask if there is anyone out there who might like to join our teaching community, either as a ‘teaching lead’ or as an ‘at table helper’. You will have full support of the PBA, and teaching Bridge to beginners is both fun and rewarding. Before the pandemic we were involved in several school situations, and we would like to get back to that … but we cannot do that without YOU!

Hopefully we will have more to report in the next edition…
